Note: The program I use to access the American Netflix in Canada is called BufferedVPN.
I’m an American and I grew up right along the Canadian the border in Buffalo, NY.
I noticed that every time I ventured north of the border to Canada I’d have trouble accessing American content online, mostly videos online on services like Hulu and Netflix.
With Netflix specifically, you can only access a limited library of content in Canada7. This is a huge downside as the American Netflix library has tens of thousands of more titles to choose from when compared to the Canadian library.
Every time I accessed Netflix from an American IP address, I’d have access to the larger Netflix library. Every time I’d access Netflix from a Canadian IP address, I’d only have access to the Canadian Netflix library.
To gain access to the American Netflix in Canada or Abroad I knew I need a way to change my IP address to an American IP address.
I tried a bunch of programs and proxy sites that just didn’t work.
After a lot of searching, I finally found an easy way to watch the American Netflix in Canada and Abroad!
So, without further delay, here you go…
Gaining access to the American Netflix library while in Canada is actually really easy. I’m going to explain exactly how to do just that.
The best part is that your Current Canadian Netflix account is the only account you’ll need to watch the American titles.
The way this works is simple. When you login to your Netflix account from Canada, you’re seeing only the titles that are available in Canada due to licensing agreements with the movie studios. But, if you log into your same account in America, you’ll see all the titles that are available in the USA – which is a lot more than the Canadian netflix library.
So the trick questions is “How do I trick my computer into thinking I’m in the USA so I can access the American Netflix library?”
That’s where a VPN comes in. I use a cheap and easy to use software called BufferedVPN. I use it on my Apple macbook but many of my friends also use it on Windows.
You simply install the software and tell select an American IP address from the list of available IPs (see image below).
Once you’re connected, you’ll be able to watch absolutely anything in the American Netflix Library.
I can see how you’re skeptical if this actually works…so I’ll share this with you…
I moved to Budapest, Hungary in the fall of 2011. There’s no Hungarian netflix library. Netflix doesn’t work at all in Hungary. With BufferedVPN, I’m able to login to Netflix and access the full library of movies and titles.
Buffered also helps me access sites like Hulu, Pandora, and other American content that I can’t access from abroad.
I can’t say enough good things about this little piece of software.
It’s definitely worth the 10 dollars I pay each month.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.
