It’s no secret that there are many websites and online services that are blocked and not accessible in China. For example, if you’ve ever tried to access Netflix in China you’ve already learned that the service isn’t available. This is for a few reasons but mostly because Netflix has copyright agreements with many movie studios that prevent them from offering their movie and TV streaming services to anyone outside the United States and a few other western countries.
While Netflix may not “officially” offer their services in China, it is still possible to access and stream Netflix in China. In the rest of this post I’m going to show you how you can not only signup and start streaming Netflix in China in about 10 minutes or less. No prior technical experience is necessary!
Ready? Let’s get started!
To understand how to access Netflix in China we must first understand why Netflix does not currently work in China. The reason for this is because companies like Netflix use a technique called “geo-targeting” that allows that to read your IP address to determine where you are in the world. If you log onto Netflix from an IP address in New York, Netflix will work just fine. If you log onto Netflix from an IP address located in Beijing, you will be blocked from accessing the site.
Therefore, to watch Netflix in China we need to change our IP address from a chinese IP address to an American IP address. Don’t worry, this sounds a lot harder than it is!
By far the easiest way to temporarily change your IP address is by using a VPN, which stands for Virtual Private Network. In short, a VPN is a private network that allows you to not only protect your browsing data but also change your IP address.
The VPN program I use and recommend is called Buffered. I’ve been using HMA for over two years and have no complaints.
They also support almost every operating system so whether you’re using a PC (Windows), Apple (MAC), Linux, or even iOS (iPad, iPhone, etc), or Android, you’ll be able to use the software.
It takes less than 2 minutes to sign up and start downloading the software onto your computer.
Here is what Buffered will look like if you’re using Mac:
You’ll find instructions for setting the VPN up on your iOS or Android device in the control panel after you signup!
After installing Buffered, you’ll have immediate access to thousands of IP addresses from all over the world. One of the main reasons why I absolutely love Buffered VPN is because they also always adding new servers and IP address for their customers to use.
Once you’ve entered your username and and password and selected your new location, all you need to do is click the “connect” button and your IP will show up like you are in the US and Netflix, along with other US based websites, will work perfectly.
After you’ve connected you VPN and you now have an American IP address, head over to Netflix.com and signup for the service. Don’t worry if you do not have a US credit card to signup. Simply use an American Zip Code like 90210 or 14221 and you’ll be able to sign up without any problems.
Click here to go ahead and signup for Buffered to start watching Netflix in China now.
