Updated: March 28th, 2017 – This method still works!
Note: The program I use to watch the US version of Netflix in France is called ExpressVPN. You can learn more about the program at https://expressvpn.com and you can learn how to use it by reading the rest of this post. Enjoy!
As you probably know by now, Netflix launched its streaming service in France in mid-September. However, due to copyright arrangements with content owners, Netflix users in France will have very limited access to Netflix. Specifically, the Netflix library in France is about 1/3 the size of the US netflix library.
I do have good news for you: With a little trick and some internet “magic,” you can signup and access Netflix just like customers in the US while having full access to all the movies and TV shows that are available in the US. In the rest of this post I’m going to show you, step-by-step, how to access the US version of Netflix in France. Also, this is very easy to setup and you need no technical skills whatsoever!
Let’s jump right into!
Netflix is well known for using something called “geo-targeting” which means they can tell where you are logging onto their website from by your IP address. If you’re logging onto Netflix.com from an IP address in France, you’ll be able to access French version of Netflix.
Currently on February 25th, 2016, Netflix subscribers in France have access to 387 TV Shows and 1541 movies while American Netflix subscribers have access to over 1081 TV shows and almost 5000 Movie titles. To matters worse, US netflix subscribers pay the same price and get so much more.
The good news is that you can access the US version of Netflix from France.
The way to access the US version of Netflix is by changing your French IP address to an American IP so when you log onto Netflix, it will look like you’re accessing the site from a computer in the USA. So the question now is, “How do I change my French IP address to a US IP address?”
Excellent question and there’s a simple answer! The easiest way to change your IP address is by using what is called a Virtual Private Network or VPN. Bascially a VPN is a private network that you connect to from your computer. The private network sends your internet traffic through a remote server which effectively changes your IP address. You can surf the web normally, the only difference is you’ll have a new American IP address!
Using a VPN is 100% legal and many companies have their employees use them for additional internet security and corporate privacy.
Setting up a VPN is much easier than you might think. There are many VPN software companies online today that offer this type of service. I should know because I’ve tried a lot of them! The problem though is that not all VPN companies will work with Netflix. This is either because their software is crap or because their “connection speeds” and bandwidth are too slow to stream Netflix.
I downloaded countless VPN clients before finding the best VPN for Netflix which is called ExpressVPN. Some of the other VPN software programs I tried were able to successfully change my IP address but Buffered is the only VPN I’ve used that is fast enough to stream Netflix movies in HD quality. This is one of the main reasons to choose Buffered VPN.
There are many other reasons why I feel Buffered is the best VPN available online. I wrote a whole blog post on it (you can read it here) so I won’t rewrite all of my reasons for choosing Buffered. Instead, I’ll give you just the highlights:
Buffered works on Mac OSX, PC (Windows), and Linux computers. They also support Android and iOS devices which is a great bonus. What’s more is that the company has over tons of VPN servers located in 30 different. And like I said, they also offer the fastest bandwidth speeds out of all the VPN providers I’ve tried.
Connecting to the VPN is extremely easy as you can see from the screenshot I’ve included below.
simply select your country form the massive list on the menu. For our purposes we’ll connect to a US server.
There are many locations to choose from and ExpressVPN is always adding new servers for you to use.
Once you’v selected your new IP address and established a connection (this takes under 10 seconds) you will be able to log onto to Netflix.com and signup for an account. All you have to do is stay connected to ExpressVPN and you’ll be able to stream all the movies and TV shows that are available in the US in France!
Note: You DO NOT need a separate Netflix account to do this. You can use your French Netflix account and simply change your IP address.
