Note: The VPN program I use to watch HBO GO from outside the US in 2016 is called Buffered VPN. This is the tool I’ll use in this tutorial. Not all VPN providers will work. I have also tested this with ExpressVPN and it worked as well.
HBO GO has been growing in popularity over the past few years.
In a nutshell, it’s an awesome on-demand movie and TV streaming application that gives you instant access to hundreds of hours of high quality video entertainment.
To date it’s been downloaded over 1 million times. The only issue with the service is that you’re not able to use it unless you’re located within the United States of America.
This guide requires you to first have an HBO Go account. If you are an HBO GO subscriber, keep reading.
Currently, if you try to access HBO GO from outside the United States you’ll get a message that reads “HBO is only available in the United States of America.” The reason you see this message is because HBO can see where you are in the world based on your IP address. Anyone who tries to access HBO GO from a non-US IP address is blocked and shown this “error message.”
However, if you change your foreign IP address to a US IP Address you’ll be able to access HBO go outside the US from wherever you happen to be in the world. The easiest way to change you IP address is by using a VPN connection which stands for Virtual Private Network.
I’m not going to go into too much detail here about how a VPN works.
If you’re really curious you can go read this post. Instead, let me give you just a brief overview.
A VPN connection occurs when your computer establishes a connection through the world wide web with a remote server somewhere else in the world. Once your computer is authenticated (through a username and password) you’re able to surf the web through the remote server, allowing you to act as if you’re in the location of this remote server. Don’t worry if this is confusing – this requires literally no setup.
The VPN program I use is called, Buffered VPN. Personally I’ve been using this company for two years and I love the service they provide. The number one reason I use them is because their bandwidth offering is large enough to stream HD quality movies and TV shows from anywhere you are in the world (of course you’ll want to be a on a decent internet connection as well).
You do not have to use Buffered, I just personally like this particular software. Any one of the VPNs from the table below will work just as well.
Step 2: Install your VPN software. After you’ve signed up for you account, you’ll be directed to download a small piece of software. This is what the Buffered VPN Client looks like.
After installation you need to select the location you’d like to connect to.
This location needs to be within the United States because HBO GO requires a US IP address.
The good news is that Buffered has lots of Servers in the US. Depending on where you are in the click a US server that’s right for you.
Confirm your IP address has indeed changed. You can do that by going to http://showip.net
Step 3: Now that you have an American IP address you can head over to the HBO GO site to start streaming Movies and TV Shows. You may find the particular IP address you’ve selected is a bit slower than usual. Feel free to keep trying different locations till you find a fast server. It shouldn’t be that hard.
Also, if you’d like to this on your iPhone or you iPad it’s very easy to setup. Follow this guide to setup Buffered VPN or your other VPN tool on your iOS device. >> How To Change IP Address on iPhone & iPad
